This vigorous compositional study takes as its point of departure the opening line of Pope St. John Paul II’s encyclical Fides et Ratio: “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.” In the drawing, allegorical representations of the two faculties cooperate in pointing the way toward a personification of Truth, while six historical members of the Benedictine Order—three mystics and three scientists—look on.
