St. Charles Lwanga
Charles Lwanga was the leader of a group of young men and teenage boys from the African kingdom of Buganda who in 1886 were burned alive for refusing to compromise their Christian principles in the face of immoral demands made by the Bugandan king. This painting was commissioned by a patron keen to promote the courage of Charles and his companions as an antidote to the licentiousness and aggressive immorality rampant in today’s society.
